Black youth learn how to navigate the education-to-career pathways for various industries, through interactive workshops, affinity group caucuses, motivational speeches, and structured networking activities. All BSSS activities are culturally specific, in that they are created and implemented by Black professionals representing both public and private sectors acting in concert with Black educators.

Happy April!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). There are many organizations around Portland honoring this important issue. If you are a Black woman/Non Binary person, join PDX Black Feminism to discuss the future of Black women’s activism and sexual violence. The meeting will be on Saturday, April 7, 2018 @ 2pm. Located at In Otherwords Feminist Community Center.

PDX Black Feminism is encouraging people to watch the documentary “The Rape of Recy Taylor” and learning more about the work of #metoo founder (Tarana Burke) to prepare for this gathering.

Filipino Street Food will be a workshop showcasing the many varieties of must-try delicacies commonly found in the streets of the Philippines.

Some Pinoy treats to look forward to are pork BBQ, kwek-kwek, fried sweet plantains, and fish balls. Don’t worry, they’re not actually real fish balls….or are they?

*TONIGHT!* Black Portlanders, Black Portlands: Reception + Artist Talk

Littman Gallery

Featuring over a 150 portraits of Black Portlanders taken over a five-year period, Black Portlanders, Black Portlands pulls from photographer Intisar Abioto’s image archive of Black Portland life. Since early 2013, Abioto has photographed people of African descent in Portland for her exploratory photo work, The Black Portlanders. This exhibit gathers selections from this work to offer a collective portrait of an abiding and self-affirmed community. The exhibit features beloved Black elders, artists, historians, poets, activists, luminaries, individuals, and families. It images and honors everyday community members. It will also include street photography from the earliest days of The Black Portlanders.

Deena Bee will be spinning and bringing her brilliance from 6-7pm. An artist talk on the body of work by Intisar Abioto will happen at 7pm.
